"Not being much of an 'angler', I had only planned on fishing one or two days to humour my husband. I thought I would spend the rest of the time relaxing around the lodge. However, I enjoyed myself so much that I was out fishing every day, all day long!"

Fishing Hatchet Lake
Hatchet Lake runs 20 kilometres by 12 kilometres at it's widest points and is broken up by many larger and smaller islands. The lake has two inflows, the Fond-Du-Lac River and the Thrift River. The lake's only outflow is the Fond-Duc-Lac River on the western shore, Corson Rapids is located at this outflow. Hatchet Lake contains northern pike, lake trout, walleye, arctic grayling and whitefish.

Fishing HLL's Flyout LakesAlong with Hatchet Lake each of our 16 fly-out lakes holds its own beauty and unique characteristics (depth, water temperature, clarity, bottom composition, type of fish, etc.)
We get daily reports from returning anglers who can inform you when a particular lake is hot! In most cases, there are only 2-3 boats on the entire lake for the day. Click the Map below to view all the surrounding lakes. |

Fishing hll’s portage lakes
You also have the opportunity to fish three portage lakes off of Hatchet Lake. Those lakes are Thrift Lake, Corson Lake and Le Drew Lake. The three lakes vary in accessibility but are easily fishable for an entire day or as a morning or afternoon excursion! They also offer that remoteness feeling, similar to a flyout, but with out the added cost. To get to either of these three lakes you must take a short boat ride from the lodge to another area of the lake (depending on which portage lake you will be fishing) then take the short 5-10 minute walking trail to the boats we have cached on the portage lake.

Rods/Reels: Ultra-light spinning reels spooled with 2-6 pound test mono. Your 4-5 weight fly rod and single action fly reel are also a favorite choice.
Lures: Casting small Mepps or Blue Fox spinners (size 0) is very effective. A plastic “bubble” float and dry fly combination also works well when spinners are not producing.
Fly Line: Weight Forward or double taper fly lines; 7’-10’ tapered leaders with 3X-6X tippets.
