Our History
1964
A welcoming outpost in the wilds.
Hatchet Lake Lodge began when Scottish immigrant George Fleming expanded an existing camp on Hatchet Lake into a fly-in fishing lodge. He and his partners later built a private airstrip, hauling heavy equipment across frozen muskeg and rivers to make direct access to the lodge possible.
1970-2000s
A legacy takes shape.
From these modest beginnings, a lasting legacy emerged. Guests arrived seeking adventure in a truly remote setting and returned year after year, drawn by exceptional fishing, shared days on the water and relationships that extended well beyond a single stay.
2008
Stewardship and continuity.
Over time, the lodge passed from Fleming to his close friend Harvey Kroll, who carried the operation forward with care, preserving the spirit and simplicity that guests had come to value.
2024
A new chapter informed by tradition.
In 2024, ownership transitioned to Layne and Shanelle Renard, fulfilling a long-held goal of operating a fishing lodge in their home province. With deep respect for Hatchet’s history, they committed to preserving its authentic character while thoughtfully refining the guest experience.
