Target Species

The ultimate catch.

Hatchet Lake Lodge offers access to thousands of miles of pristine water. Home to trophy northern pike, lake trout, walleye and Arctic grayling, this is fishing at its finest—land all four to earn the coveted Grand Slam. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a beginner, our tailored experiences ensure you’ll reel in the catch of a lifetime.

Northern Pike

The most targeted species at Hatchet Lake, the northern pike (Esox lucius) makes a prized catch owing to its aggressive nature and impressive size. Our guides have spent tens of thousands of hours searching, patterning and catching these incredible predators. Join us early in the year to target pike in the shallow warm bays post spawn or later in the year when the fish have moved to the deeper weed beds in search of food and cooler temperatures.

Lake Trout

A giant lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) is at the top of any experienced angler’s bucket list. Early in summer, these fish cruise shallow sand flats and rocky reefs before moving to deeper, cooler water later in the season. The challenge of pursuing lake trout in pristine environments is what makes landing one so unforgettable.

Walleye

Possibly the most sought-after fish species in Canada, walleye (Sander vitreus) have a beautiful golden colour and a subtle yet distinct bite. With their nocturnal feeding habits and a tendency to congregate in deep, structure-rich areas, walleye are known for being elusive and challenging to catch. Our guides and guests find walleye in the deeper holes along the river, sometimes even mixed in with the pike, which makes for an exciting surprise.

Arctic Grayling

Arctic grayling (Thymallus arcticus), often called the sailfish of the north due to their distinctive sail-like dorsal fins and vibrant, iridescent sheen, are drawn to unique environments like the Corson Rapids. They’re smaller than our other target species but present a rewarding catch, especially for fly anglers, for their willingness to take a variety of flies and do spirited, acrobatic battle with the line.

“From the flight in looking out the window of the plane to spending days fishing from the boats, it’s remarkable how huge and pristine these lakes are, and you get them all to your small group! The quantity and quality of the fish is uncanny. I do not believe you will find fishing holes like this anywhere in the world.”

“The fishing was actually ‘catching’—pretty much every time I put my hook in the lake. Even a grand slam one day: trout, pike, walleye, & grayling and the shore lunches were to die for! It’s truly the Saskatchewan trip of a lifetime.”

—Shelly R.

“My arm got tired from reeling in fish. I lost count after the first few hours, but caught more than 50 northern pike on the first day. Over the week I reeled in a 37-inch and two 40-inch pike. After a while, hooking 35-plus pike became routine.”

—Thomas B.

“We had the fishing trip of a lifetime at Hatchet AGAIN. Our group of seven caught over 1000 fish in 4 days. Over half were over 30 inch northerns and several were over 40 inches. HUGE lake trout and walleyes were pulled in too. I can’t wait until I can fish there again.”

—John H.

“Not being much of an angler, I had only planned on fishing one or two days to humour my husband. I thought I would spend the rest of the time relaxing around the lodge. However, I enjoyed myself so much that I was out fishing every day, all day long! My perseverance was rewarded on the final day when I caught a 48” northern pike! What a thrill!”
